Dr. Lewis previously served as Advisor in the World Bank’s Research Department, and was previously the chief economist of Human Development during which she oversaw the economic and policy work of the World Bank in the area of human development, encompassing health, education, labor markets, pensions and welfare. She is an expert on the economics of health and health systems and has worked in more than 30 countries.
Dr. Lewis led the team that designed the World Bank’s first major HIV project in Brazil in 1993. She has published widely on a variety of topics related to health and population issues in developing and transition countries and has worked at the US Agency for International Development, the Urban Institute, and the Center for Global Development. She holds a PhD in population economics from Johns Hopkins University.
